It's as easy as ABC!

Animal Birth Control, that is.

PETA and Miss molten-hot Dita von Teese have launched a new ad campaign addressing (1) the spaying and neutering of animal companions and (2) the reasons why you (YOU!) should adopt from a shelter, rather than buying from a petstore. One point the PETA campaign makes that most people don't think about is that "if you buy an animal or allow your animal to breed, you are effectively killing animals in shelters who are waiting for good homes."

One difference between shelters and pet stores that I've noticed is that the experience of going to one more accurately reflects the level of committment you make in entering a relationship with an animal companion. Shelters are loud and noisy and overfull. Shelters require application forms, fees, proof of landlord permission or home ownership, and references. Shelters are necessarily stringent. Shelters don't take animal adoption lightly: and neither should you. Shelters don't make it easy, but that is good. Pet stores are set up to display merchandise, to get you to fall in love with a little ball of fuzz or fur or feathers, not necessarily to educate you on the fact that you are making a lifetime committment to the health, happiness, and well-being of that animal.

If I still haven't gotten your attention, I'll bet Dita can!

(Thanks to Perez Hilton for the news.)
